Jade Disc N° 1

Jade Bi discs, like this one, have been found in the tombs of ancient Chinese emperors and aristocrats, although their precise meaning and purpose remain unknown.

Traditionally shaped by hand from exceptionally hard stone, each disc required considerable skill and patience. The soft, satin-like surface was achieved by slowly rubbing the jade with sand, creating a subtle lustre quite different from the high gloss of modern machine-polished jade.

With its beautifully mottled dark surface and natural variations in tone, this Bi disc is particularly striking displayed on its custom-made metal stand.
